Samba Society presents Soul of Forró 2: A Tribute to Antônio Carlos & Jocafi (21+)

LA’s forró stalwarts MôForró and Brazilian funkateers Os Zagueiros from the Samba Society collective once again share the stage, this time to pay tribute to Antônio Carlos & Jocafi.

The composers Antônio Carlos & Jocafi, comprise one of the most successful duos of Brazilian Popular Music of the 1970s. With songs ranging from traditional samba, forró and bossa nova to more adventurous post-Tropicália rock and afro-funk, they recorded thirteen albums from 1971 to 1996.

Along with having their compositions recorded by a number of Brazilian greats including Gilberto Gil, Luiz Gonzaga, Maria Creuza and Elis Regina, they achieved an international reputation with the enormous success of “Você Abusou”, the opening track of their debut album. The song has also been performed by Sérgio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, and in Spanish in the voice of Cuban legend Celia Cruz. An unauthorized French version of the song by Michel Fugain became the anthem of the French Socialist Party in 1973.

Due in large part to their Bahian roots, the music of Antônio Carlos & Jocafi is deeply influenced by Afro-Brazilian traditions, reflected in the many songs that explore the rhythms and language of Candomblé. Though they have had numerous hits that have become standards in the Brazilian songbook, in recent years, their more obscure and funkier tracks are being discovered by a growing international community of DJs and Brazilian music aficionados. MôForró and Os Zagueiros will explore these deep, lesser-known cuts, with new arrangements, improvisations, and interpretations on the music of these legends of Brazilian Popular Music.
